Last night, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), submitted his letter of resignation.

According to reliable sources, Adamu, who was elected national chairman of the party at its national convention in March 2022, has sent his letter of resignation to the presidential villa in Abuja in advance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's return from the African Union (AU) summit in Kenya.

One of the sources said that about 4 p.m. on Sunday, Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, delivered the resignation letter to Femi Gbajabiamila, the president's chief of staff.

“He has resigned. The resignation letter signed by him has been sent to the villa. The letter was addressed to President Tinubu. But since the president is away in Kenya for the AU meeting, the letter was sent to his chief of staff,” the source said.

Also, a source close to Adamu corroborated this, adding that, “The national chairman resigned following a gang up by people around the president to embarrass him during the meetings of the party slated for tomorrow and Wednesday.”

Prior to the party's National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, which are scheduled for tomorrow and Wednesday, the source refuted a claim that President Tinubu had urged Adamu to quit. In order to resolve crucial issues impacting it and the crisis inside the National Working Committee (NWC), the party set July 10 and 11 as the dates for its National Caucus and NEC meetings.

The sessions were eventually rescheduled for tomorrow and Wednesday, though.

According to one of the party's original members, Adamu quit after learning that two powerful people close to the president had organized an oppositional campaign against him before the meetings.

“He resigned because they have started to collate signatures to impeach him during the forthcoming meetings. He resigned to save himself from humiliation,” the top politician said.

Adamu informed this newspaper when he was contacted that he would hold off on commenting until President Tinubu got back from the AU conference.

“I won’t talk about the issue because the president is away,” Adamu who was the preferred candidate of former President Muhammadu Buhari for the chairmanship seat, said.

It will be recalled that Adamu had named former Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party's consensus candidate just before the APC presidential primaries.

Adamu's statement sparked a commotion inside the party as governors from the North banded together to oppose him. They proceeded to the residence and made the decision to zone the presidency to the south.

The party had to start accepting applications for its presidential ticket because of the governors' positions. Tinubu prevailed in the vote. Adamu recently protested the list of the party's top officials that Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Senate President Godswill Akpabio had released.

President Tinubu called Adamu to the mansion after the development. The problem was handled during the meeting that included Senator Iyiola Omisore, the party's national secretary.
